Dear SHBE Supporters,
I am writing today to ensure that you are aware of the recent decision by the Saskatchewan Ministry of Education to discontinue provincial Grade 12 exams. While the government has stated that this change will create a more equitable system, the reality is that it eliminates a critical pathway for homeschoolers and adult learners. For many years, homeschooling families have relied on the ability to challenge provincial exams to obtain Level 30 credits necessary for post-secondary education. While SHBE is actively engaged with the Minister of Education, perhaps our best chance of impacting change on this issue is for each of you to reach out to your MLA or to the Minister of Education.
Below is a sample letter that SHBE is providing, should you wish to use it as the basis for writing a letter to the Minister of Education or to your own MLA. If you have first-hand experience of planning to challenge the provincial exams for post-secondary admission, a personal story would be a helpful addition. A list of the MLAs and their contact information is available at https://www.legassembly.sk.ca/mlas/mla-contact-information/.
If you wish to use your own wording, here are the relevant facts and impacts that SHBE recommends you include. Please remember to keep your letter respectful.
- The Saskatchewan Ministry of Education is discontinuing the provincial grade 12 exams.
- Homeschoolers have made extensive use of challenging the exams to obtain a level 30 credit as post-secondary pre-requisites.
- The Distance Learning Centre and all other available options do not allow a stand-alone exam challenge.
- The Saskatchewan DLC requires all students to complete level 10 and level 20 courses to enroll in level 30 courses.
- All students enrolled in level 30 courses must complete all material and class attendance to be eligible to write the final exam.
- There is no assessment method available to homeschooled students that will adequately replace the option of challenging the provincial exams.
Thank you for your continued support.
Sincerely,
Rod Amberson
